Portland, Ore. (October 13, 2010) – Trailhead Coffee Roasters took home top honors among the small coffee roasters featured at Sip: Coffee for a Cause on Friday, October 8 in Portland. The public coffee competition, which took place at Pioneer Courthouse Square, was a fundraiser for the YWCA of Greater Portland.
In the public taste test, Trailhead Coffee Roasters was voted “Best Little Bean,” beating out 11 other local and regional micro-roasters, including Blue Gardenia, Caffe Umbria, Caffe Vita, Cardinal Coffee, Cellar Door Coffee, Courier Coffee Roasters, Oblique Coffee Roasters, Public Domain, Spella and St. Johns Coffee Roasters.
“This was a great event for a great cause- one that resonates with Trailhead Coffee Roasters, since all of our coffees support women farmers and their communities,” said Charlie Wicker, owner and roaster of Trailhead Coffee Roasters. “Portland is home to a number of great micro-roasters, and I’m honored to receive top honors.”
Sip featured two other award categories: Big Bean, which was won by Kivu (Fred Meyer brand), and Best Bean, which was awarded to Water Street Coffee. The first annual competition was a fundraiser for the YWCA of Greater Portland. Attendees donated $5 to the nonprofit, which is dedicated to changing lives by empowering women and their families to achieve safety, opportunity, and independence.
About Trailhead Coffee Roasters
Artisan coffee roaster Trailhead Coffee Roasters was created in 2009 by Charlie Wicker to combine his passions in life: great coffee, being outdoors, strong communities and being a good steward to the earth.
Trailhead is committed to supporting the women, families and communities where its coffees are grown. Most of their beans are sourced through Café Femenino, a co-op of women farmers. Trailhead also donates a portion of the profits to a revolving KIVA microloan program that supports women in Africa.
Based in Portland, Oregon, Trailhead gives back to their community by offering their coffees at many bicycle-related events, from cyclocross races to the Shift to Bike’s Breakfast on the Bridges monthly event where they serve coffee and pastries to bicycle commuters.
